Two-Sided Independent Scaffolding in Havant for Roof Repairs & Solar Panel Installation

Two-Sided Independent Scaffolding in Havant for Roof Repairs & Solar Panel Installation

Project: Roof Repairs & Solar Panel Installation
Location: Havant, Hampshire, PO9
Sector: Roofing / Renewable Energy
Scaffolding Type: Two-Sided Independent Scaffolding
Scope of Works: Access Scaffolding for Roof Repairs and Solar Installation

Project Overview

Whites Scaffolding was appointed to provide a two-sided independent scaffolding system for a property in Havant, Hampshire, to support roof repairs and the installation of solar panels.

The project required a practical access solution that would allow roofing contractors and solar installation specialists to work at roof level. With two separate areas of the building requiring access, independent scaffolding was selected to provide working platforms along the relevant elevations.

Our role was to erect a stable scaffold structure that would support both elements of the project, allowing the contractors to reach the required sections of the roof without relying solely on ladders or other temporary access methods.

Scope of Works

Whites Scaffolding erected a two-sided independent scaffold, with the structure running parallel to the external walls of the building.

The scaffolding was installed to support two main activities:

  • Roof Repairs: Providing elevated access for contractors carrying out repairs and maintenance to the roof.
  • Solar Panel Installation: Allowing solar installation specialists to access the roof for the fitting of mounting equipment and solar panels.

By providing scaffolding along two sides of the property, the arrangement offered access to the relevant roof elevations while supporting the different requirements of the roofing and solar installation work.

What Is Two-Sided Independent Scaffolding?

Independent scaffolding, sometimes referred to as double-row scaffolding, is a commonly used access system for building maintenance, roofing and construction projects.

The structure typically consists of two rows of vertical standards connected by horizontal ledgers and transoms. Unlike putlog scaffolding, which uses the building for part of its platform support, an independent scaffold has its own arrangement of standards supporting the working platforms. Suitable ties or other stabilising arrangements may still be required.

For this project in Havant, independent scaffolding was erected along two sides of the building.

Benefits of independent scaffolding include:

  • Stable Working Platforms: Providing a practical working area for contractors carrying out tasks at height.
  • Roof-Level Access: Allowing workers to reach roof edges and other elevated areas.
  • Versatile Applications: Suitable for supporting different trades, including roofers and solar installation contractors.
  • Adaptable Configuration: Working platform heights and scaffold arrangements can be planned around the requirements of the building.
  • Reduced Reliance on Ladders: Providing a more suitable access arrangement for many tasks requiring prolonged work at height.

Independent scaffolding is frequently used for roof repairs, roof replacements, external refurbishment and renewable energy installations.

Scaffolding for Roof Repairs

Roof repairs often require contractors to work along roof edges, inspect damaged areas and access sections of the roof that cannot be reached safely from ground level.

For the Havant project, the independent scaffolding was erected to provide access for the planned roofing work.

A properly configured scaffold can help roofing contractors carry out repairs more efficiently by providing suitable working platforms alongside the building.

This approach is particularly useful when repairs involve extended periods of work at height or when contractors need regular access to different areas of the roof.

Whites Scaffolding regularly provides scaffolding for roofing contractors, with access arrangements tailored to roof repairs, replacements and maintenance projects.

Supporting the Solar Panel Installation

The second purpose of the scaffolding was to support the installation of solar panels.

Solar installations require contractors to access roof areas for positioning mounting brackets, installing rails and fitting photovoltaic panels. These activities involve working at height and require suitable access arrangements.

For the Havant project, the two-sided scaffold provided access to the roof elevations involved in the installation.

Using an independent scaffold can offer several advantages during solar installation projects.

Access for installation teams

Scaffolding allows installers to reach roof level and work from designated platforms while preparing and fitting the solar panel system.

Supporting different installation stages

Solar projects can involve several stages, including preparing the roof, positioning mounting equipment and installing the panels. Suitable scaffolding can support access throughout these activities.

Working alongside roofing contractors

Where roof repairs and solar installation form part of the same project, a scaffold arrangement planned for both activities can reduce the need for separate access installations.

Our scaffolding for solar energy installations service supports contractors undertaking renewable energy projects on residential and commercial properties.

The Solution

For this project, Whites Scaffolding erected an independent scaffold system along two sides of the building.

The arrangement was selected to provide access for both the roofing and solar installation activities, with the structure positioned parallel to the external elevations.

Using independent scaffolding allowed the access system to serve the roof repair work and the planned renewable energy installation without requiring an entirely separate scaffold for each activity.

The project demonstrates how a relatively straightforward scaffolding arrangement can accommodate different types of roof-level work when the access requirements are considered together.

The Result

The completed scaffolding installation provided a dedicated access structure for the roof repairs and solar panel installation in Havant.

With independent scaffolding erected along two sides of the property, the roofing and solar installation contractors had an access arrangement suited to the planned work.

The project highlights the versatility of independent scaffolding for building maintenance and renewable energy installations, particularly where several activities require access to the same roof.
