Project Name: Reading Town Centre
Date: December 2025
Location: Reading
Client: Refurbishment project
Sector: Commercial / Town Centre
Type of Scaffolding: Fully boarded access scaffold
Scope of Works: Remedial works
Project Duration: 5 days
Project Overview
Whites Scaffolding were appointed to provide a safe and practical access solution for a refurbishment project located in Reading town centre. The works involved external upgrades to an existing building, including window replacements and brickwork repointing, all carried out in a busy public environment.
Town centre projects bring added responsibility. With high pedestrian footfall and limited working space, the scaffolding had to be designed and installed in a way that protected the public while still allowing the client to complete the refurbishment efficiently.
Understanding the Requirement
The client required a fully boarded access scaffold to support a full external refurb. This included safe access for trades carrying out window changes and detailed repointing work across the façade. The scaffold needed to provide consistent, stable platforms while remaining secure and well managed throughout the job.
Because of the central location, public safety was the primary concern. The structure had to be carefully planned so that pedestrians could continue to move safely around the building without exposure to risk.
Challenges and Solutions
The main challenge on this project was keeping the public safe at all times. With the site positioned in a busy area, scaffold erection during peak hours would have increased risk and disruption.
To overcome this, our team attended site early on the first day, allowing the initial setup to be completed before public footfall increased. This proactive approach significantly reduced interaction with pedestrians and helped create a safer working environment from the outset.
Once erected, the scaffold was fully boarded to prevent tools or materials from falling, and the working area was clearly defined. This ensured a safe separation between the refurbishment works and the surrounding public spaces.
Scope of Work Delivered
We installed a fully boarded access scaffold designed to support multiple trades working simultaneously. The structure provided safe, level platforms for window replacement works and detailed brickwork repointing.
The scaffold layout allowed operatives to move comfortably along the building frontage, improving efficiency while maintaining safety. Every element was installed with stability and usability in mind, ensuring the client could progress through the refurb without unnecessary delays.
Safety Management
Public safety remained a constant focus throughout the project. Early installation, clear site boundaries, and secure boarding all played a role in reducing risk. Regular checks ensured the scaffold remained safe and fit for purpose during the five-day programme.
By maintaining control of the working area and planning installation times carefully, we helped create a calm, organised site despite the busy surroundings.
The Outcome
The project was completed successfully within the five-day timeframe. The client was able to carry out the full refurbishment, including window changes and repointing, with safe and reliable access in place throughout.
This project demonstrates the importance of planning and timing when working in town centre locations. With the right approach, even high-footfall areas can be managed safely and efficiently.
