Our fully trained and insured team works to strict health and safety standards on every job, ensuring secure structures and complete peace of mind.
Whites Scaffolding can assess scaffolding requirements for maintenance, refurbishment and construction work at defence and military premises. Suitable access may be required for estate buildings, accommodation blocks, workshops, stores and other facilities where contractors need to work safely above ground level.
Enquiries may relate to the British Army, Royal Air Force (RAF) and Royal Navy, as well as their civilian support industries. These include defence engineering, aerospace maintenance, logistics, specialist manufacturing, ammunition-related premises and intelligence or research facilities. We assess the building-access requirement rather than assuming that every defence-related establishment has the same permissions or operating conditions.
There is no single scaffold arrangement for a defence site. A short-duration roof repair, a façade refurbishment and work around high-level mechanical services have different platform, loading and access requirements. The correct proposal depends on the structure, the work being undertaken and the restrictions set by the site.
Defence premises can have additional entry procedures and operational boundaries. We discuss these at the enquiry stage so that the client or principal contractor can establish whether the proposed work, personnel and delivery arrangements can be authorised. Site clearance, passes and permission to work must never be assumed.
For appropriate projects, we can discuss access solutions from survey and design through installation and removal, subject to the site’s approval processes and the agreed contract scope.

On a controlled defence establishment, a sound scaffold design is only part of a workable plan. The delivery and installation team must also be able to reach the approved work area without conflicting with local security and safety procedures.
Before a start date is fixed, the responsible client contact should establish:
Where a layout or load requirement falls outside a recognised standard configuration, our scaffolding design service describes the assessment and design information required. The site owner or principal contractor must also agree any additional security documentation and authorisations.
Have a restricted-access project brief? Contact Whites Scaffolding to discuss whether the practical site conditions can be accommodated.
A site can remain in use while essential estate repairs are being undertaken, but only where the work areas are suitably managed. The scaffold location may affect emergency routes, pedestrians, vehicles, maintenance traffic or access to adjacent buildings.
Consider a workshop needing repairs above an entrance. The question is not simply how to reach the wall: delivery routes, overhead work, the use of the doorway and the movement of other trades must also be assessed. Temporary closure or an alternative route may be required while scaffold components are being handled.
For accommodation or administrative buildings, the contractor may need to consider occupants’ routes, daylight and window access, privacy and the times when noisy works are allowed. Some restrictions arise from the site’s own management rules rather than scaffolding legislation.
We can discuss staged installation, dedicated access points and changes to the scaffold programme with the contractor. Any continuing use of a nearby area depends on the risk assessment and the agreed separation measures; a scaffold alone does not make activities underneath safe.
Need to keep part of a defence estate operational? Tell Whites Scaffolding which movements, entrances and activities must be considered during the works.
Different building types need different forms of access. The examples below illustrate potential applications, not a claim that Whites Scaffolding has completed work on any particular military installation.
In Wiltshire, relevant defence locations include MOD Lyneham (the former RAF Lyneham, now a tri-service technical training establishment), MOD Boscombe Down near Amesbury, and Porton Down near Salisbury, where the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) is headquartered. We can consider enquiries concerning buildings at or around such locations, including those from approved support contractors, subject to each site’s procurement, security and access arrangements. Their inclusion here does not imply an existing contract or previous work at these establishments.
The appropriate scaffold depends on the task, working height, load and available support points. Defence-related maintenance can involve extensive roof areas, high internal spaces or plant that is difficult to reach without a temporary access structure.
Not every building needs a full perimeter scaffold. Conversely, a small tower may be unsuitable for tasks involving large materials, repeated movement between levels or prolonged work across a wide façade. A survey and clear scope of work help avoid choosing equipment on footprint alone.
Protection during roof refurbishment: If work will expose a building to rain or falling debris, a separately assessed temporary roof or protective enclosure may be suitable. A covering changes wind loads and must not simply be attached to an ordinary scaffold without considering its design. For extensive projects, our building encapsulation service explains the options. Ordinary sheeting is not equivalent to a specialist hazardous-material containment system.
Unsure which access arrangement is appropriate? Send Whites Scaffolding the working heights, task description and any approved drawings available for review.

Precise information helps produce a useful scaffold proposal and reduces later revisions. For defence or military maintenance, separate the technical scaffold requirements from the local site-access conditions, even where both appear in the same contract pack.
Under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, scaffolding must be planned and suitable for its use. Structures outside a recognised standard configuration require appropriate bespoke design by a competent person. The project team should also agree temporary-works responsibilities and how the scaffold will be handed over, inspected and altered.
Costs reflect these practical requirements: complicated access, additional design, phased installation, protection measures and a longer hire period can all affect the quotation. Security vetting and client approvals may also influence when work can begin; they must be discussed rather than silently included or promised.

Can Whites Scaffolding work on a military base?
We can consider an enquiry for scaffolding on a defence property, but an appointment depends on the project requirements, location, access permissions, availability and any mandatory contractor approvals. We do not assume that general scaffolding experience provides a right to enter a military establishment.
Does the scaffolding team automatically hold security clearance?
No clearance should be assumed. The client or contracting authority must specify the required level of vetting, identity checks, passes and escort arrangements. We would need to establish whether those conditions can be met before agreeing the work.
Can you consider scaffolding enquiries from defence support industries?
Yes. We can review non-sensitive proposals from authorised contractors working on engineering, logistics, aviation support, ammunition-related or intelligence-related buildings. Whether a project can proceed depends on the nature of the work, any hazardous-area restrictions, contractor approvals and the site’s security requirements.
Can we send building photographs with a request for a quote?
Only where the site owner permits the images to be taken and shared. If photographs, plans or equipment details are restricted, first agree an authorised way to describe the scope, arrange a survey or supply approved information.
Can the scaffold be delivered without disrupting the main site entrance?
Sometimes. The safe unloading area, vehicle dimensions, gate access and restrictions on component movement need to be confirmed. An alternative delivery sequence or a temporary traffic arrangement may be required.
Need to establish whether your site can be accommodated? Contact Whites Scaffolding with the authorised point of contact and basic, shareable project details.
How is the price of scaffolding for a defence site calculated?
Pricing depends on the structure, size, design complexity, working loads, duration, installation and removal arrangements. Restricted working hours, phased access and special protection can affect cost where relevant. We would review the specific scope before quoting.
Can a scaffold be adapted during a maintenance contract?
Yes, where changes are properly assessed, approved and carried out by competent scaffolders. Moving a platform, adding loading capacity or applying sheeting can alter the structure’s stability and may require revised design information. Other site approvals may also be needed.
How often should a construction scaffold be inspected?
A construction scaffold subject to the relevant statutory regime must be inspected before first use, at intervals not exceeding seven days, and after circumstances likely to affect safety, such as significant alterations or adverse weather. A competent person must undertake inspections and the responsible parties should agree recordkeeping and site arrangements.
How early should we arrange scaffolding before the planned works?
Allow time for a technical survey, any necessary design, site access approvals, delivery arrangements and agreement of the programme. The lead time is site-dependent; security or permit procedures can take longer than the physical erection work.
Can scaffolding be supplied for rooftop HVAC servicing?
Potentially, subject to the position of the equipment and available support. Our scaffolding for refrigeration and air-conditioning work explains access considerations for rooftop plant, service routes and equipment changes. Technical servicing and any specialist certification remain the responsibility of the relevant trades.
